This is a delightful musical surprise. Singer Amy Cervini leads a quartet with a voice that is strong, but never strident. She presents songs with enough heart to convince a listener of her sincerity and enough musical talent to make it worth listening. The album includes good versions of familiar songs such as “Don’t Fence Me In” and “Don’t Explain,” but also has unfamiliar gems such as “Because I Told You So” and “Extraordinary Machine.” It also includes Edgar Meyer’s “Sliding Down” and Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat.” While Cervini and her voice are the stars of the album, the work of the group also is fine. Pianist Michael Cabe has the biggest instrumental role, but he also plays accordion on “Extraordinary Machine,” where he is joined by drummer Ernesto Cervini on clarinet. They and bassist Mark Lau also join in on vocals on “Mushaboom” and “Holiday.”
