Pulse
December 1, 2004 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
The Pulse composers – Darcy James Argue, Jamie Begian, Bill Apollo Brown, Joseph C. Phillips Jr., JC Sanford, Joshua Shneider, and Yumiko Sunami – met at the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop in New York City. However, their goal for Pulse was to create and perform music with a more expansive vision. Founder Phillips Jr. says, “Pulse is not about ‘-isms’ or rigidity and divisions in music. While each composer has a distinct musical personality, we all share a desire to connect to and engage with listeners using a variety of musical styles. Elements of jazz, contemporary classical music, rock, funk, free improvisation and more are in our music, but they are freely combined and don’t define or limit us. I feel this sense of ambiguity or “what is it”-ness heightens the expressivity of the music and makes Pulse a fun and refreshing group to be a part of.” The 10-piece performing ensemble includes musicians who have performed and recorded with Steve Reich, Maria Schneider, Joe Lovano, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Terence Blanchard, Gamelan Dharma Swara, Paul Nash, John Abercrombie, and Stephanie Winters. They include Amy Cervini (voice), Rob Wilkerson (reeds), Steve Kenyon (reeds), Linda Blacken (horn), Kurtis Pivert (trombone), John Hadfield (percussion), Diana Herold (percussion), Sebastian Noelle (guitar), Jody Redhage (cello), and Ike Sturm (bass). THE PUFFIN ROOM GALLERY 435 Broome Street (btwn Broadway and Crosby) Tickets are $15

Vipassana
May 11, 2005 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Renee Weiler Concert Hall
at the Greenwich House Music School
46 Barrow Street
in Greenwich Village, New York City
(Take 1 or 9 Train to Christopher Street; walk south on 7th Avenue about 1 block. Make a right onto Barrow Street; school is mid-block on the right)
(212) 242-4770.
Admission is $15 at the door. $12 by RSVP in advance at joephillips@numinousmusic.com.
The composition is a new 4-movement, 70 minute work entitled, Vipassana. In the Pali language of the early Buddhist texts, vipassana means “to see things as they really are” or insight. Vipassana will be conducted by Mr. Phillips and performed by an expanded Numinous ensemble of 25 musicians. Normally Numinous is a 14 person chamber group (string quartet, woodwinds, brass, percussion) and features music that combines modern ‘classical’ music and ‘jazz’ improvisational elements.
Partly inspired by some of the nature photographs from Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s Earth from Above series and the poetry (in the final movement) of Denise Levertov, Vipassana is an experience of expressive beauty and emotional depth that hopes to represent those moments of clarity and calmness which reveal “the inner nature of all beings and things.”
